TPE 6 Developing as a Professional Educator
Introduction
To get in the Holiday Spirit and keep students engaged, I taught a lesson that had a Holiday poem and it came along with a YouTube short video. Students had a copy of the poem to follow along with, we analyzed the poem, meaning behind certain words, and the message in the poem. We then completed a worksheet with comprehension questions from the poem.
6.1. Reflect on their own teaching practice and level of subject matter and pedagogical knowledge to plan and implement instruction that can improve student learning.
6.3. Establish professional learning goals and make progress to improve their practice by routinely engaging in communication and inquiry with colleagues.
6.4. Demonstrate how and when to involve other adults and to communicate effectively with peers and colleagues, families, and members of the larger school community to support teacher and student learning.
When I get together with other teachers on PLC days every other week I will run ideas past them, ask for input or feedback for specific lessons I have in mind, and make professional goals so my students can advance.
6.2. Recognize their own values and implicit and explicit biases, the ways in which these values and implicit and explicit biases may positively and negatively affect teaching and learning, and work to mitigate any negative impact on the teaching and learning of students. They exhibit positive dispositions of caring, support, acceptance, and fairness toward all students and families, as well as toward their colleagues.
6.5. Demonstrate professional responsibility for all aspects of student learning and classroom management, including responsibility for the learning outcomes of all students, along with appropriate concerns and policies regarding the privacy, health, and safety of students and families. Beginning teachers conduct themselves with integrity and model ethical conduct for themselves and others.
When looking for or creating a lesson I try my best to be sensitive to my students cultural background. For this lesson I made sure that my students all celebrated the Holidays so I did not make any student or their families feel uncomfortable. While I may have different beliefs and ideals from my students, I try to leave that aside because the best way to engage my students is to find a middle ground to relate to them. In this lesson the message was that no matter how many times you try and fail never give up. There was also the message of supporting people who are struggling because sometimes they just need someone there for them so they can gain hope.
6.6. Understand and enact professional roles and responsibilities as mandated reporters and comply with all laws concerning professional responsibilities, professional conduct, and moral fitness, including the responsible use of social media and other digital platforms and tools.
When completing lessons I use Go Guardian to monitor student activity on their Chromebook. For this lesson students did not have to use Chromebook which helped reduce the chances of student misusing their Chromebook. The video I showed was also a cartoon that was age appropriate with powerful educational content. The lesson was purchased on TPT which helped the validity of the content.
6.7. Critically analyze how the context, structure, and history of public education in California affects and influences state, district, and school governance as well as state and local education finance.
While I understand that the content standards and structure put in place by the state is meant to help students advance I do feel that there is too much pressure put on to teachers to teach certain lessons by a certain. This pressure is then put onto the students to get work done quickly. The problem with this is teachers have to rush through lessons which does not allow student to retain information. Instead, students struggle to stay caught up with their teachers so instead of retaining information they learn it then dump it.
Reflection
I try to consistently communicate with colleagues and get feedback. When we work together and collaborate it sets our students up for success. I also find lessons that my students that they can relate to so they are more engaged. Lastly I take my time with lessons which helps them not just complete assignments to get a good grade, instead they listen, learn, and retain information I teach them.
